Researchers from Freie Universität Berlin and ITA RWTH Aachen, two academic institutions specialising in virology and textiles, have confirmed that Swiss hygiene company Livinguard’s new self-disinfecting technology can permanently destroy Covid-19 when applied to textiles or surfaces.

This technology is applied to fabrics used in facemasks and can continuously deactivate exhaled viruses, including 99.9% of the virus that causes Covid-19.

The principle underlying the Livinguard technology is to apply a positive charge at the molecular level to textile surfaces. When microbes come into contact with these positive charges, the negatively charged microbial cell is destroyed, leading to permanent destruction of the microorganism.

The masks have three layers offering five levels of protection:

  • The outer layer has Livinguard’s antiviral and repellent coating on the inside and outside of the fabric and the antiviral technology bonded into the fabric itself, giving three levels of protection.
  • The middle layer is a non-woven industry standard filter which channels viruses for destruction in the outer or inner layers, giving a further level of protection.
  • The inner layer is also specially treated with antiviral technology, for a final layer of protection.
