There is increasing pressure on construction site managers to reduce the off-site impacts of stormwater runoff on streams, lakes, and estuaries adjacent to their projects. Traditional erosion and sediment control measures, even when properly installed and maintained, will often release highly turbid water to the environment. Increasing scrutiny and regulation of these discharges is driving developers to seek cost-effective practices to address the turbidity that standard sediment traps and basins cannot capture. Polymer systems developed in or adapted from water treatment, mining, and agricultural applications have been adapted for use on construction sites and can bring runoff turbidity to acceptable levels, often two orders of magnitude lower. This workshop will provide participants with the background and knowledge to implement a wide range of methods to reduce turbidity in construction site stormwater. The workshop is designed to provide practical information on the use of polymers for professionals involved in designing and managing erosion, sediment, and turbidity control on construction sites. We are offering a Certificate of Completion for those interested in taking an exam at the end of the day. The Certificate of Completion will provide evidence that you have completed the workshop and understand the basic concepts of turbidity control systems. The Certificate of Completion is not a substitute for professional licenses or registrations. Those who choose not to take the exam will receive a Certificate of Attendance confirming the number of instructional hours attended. 16 March 2010 - 01 January 1800

Modern wastewater treatment plants are able to produce an effluent that has a negligible impact on the receiving watercourse. The efficacy of such treatment is evidenced by the continuous improvement in the quality of our rivers which the Environment Agency acknowledges as being the best on record. However achieving this level of improvement itself generates pollution, principally as a result of its high energy usage and release of greenhouse gases (GHG’s) such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxides. The impact of GHG’s on our climate is widely recognised and accepted and the consequences of ignoring these impacts have been clearly outlined in the Stern Report. Indeed many commentators now consider that climate change is the biggest global threat to public health of the 21st Century. There are many examples of costly enhancements to wastewater treatment that deliver questionable environmental benefits, inter alia: a spot compliance regime, effluent disinfection, odour control, nitrogen removal and sludge pasteurisation. If the water industry is to take seriously the threats of climate change, the challenge for both the regulators and the water companies is to balance the environmental costs and benefits of wastewater treatment in a manner that considers the wider environmental impacts and not solely the aquatic environment. It is the aim of this course therefore, to consider: What are the relative environmental impacts and benefits of our current treatment regime and which consented parameters deliver negligible measurable benefits? What is the scope for relaxing consents, where this can be shown to demonstrate negligible adverse impacts but large reductions in GHG emissions? What low-carbon treatment alternatives are available, but held back by the consenting regime? What limits on GHG emissions should water companies strive towards for its wastewater treatment activities? We are inviting speakers to contribute to this debate and if you wish to make a presentation please email a proposed title and 3 brief bullet points outlining your talk 25 March 2010 - 01 January 1800

All wastewater treatment plants will experience operating problems from time to time, and some plants a lot more than others. Very few activated sludge plants have been completely free from foaming and bulking problems at some time and other plants suffer these problems on a routine basis. In a similar way poor solids removal, inefficient BOD removal, odour problems, inhibition and toxicity can all occur on a seemingly random basis. Routine sampling and chemical analysis from is expensive, demanding and its interpretation is not always clear. By contrast microscopic examination of the microbial consortium in the treatment plant is simple, inexpensive and provides extensive information as to the likely causes of plant problems. The results can also be used to optimize the performance of the plant to ensure that effluent is as good as the plant is able to produce and that energy costs and sludge production are at a minimum. 13 April 2010 - 01 January 1800
Aqua Enviro Training Suite, Wakefield http://www.aquaenviro.com/
A modern activated sludge plant incorporates a number of features to ensure that the mixed liquor settles well in the aeration basin. These include: selectors, anoxic zones, plug flow mixing and adequate settlement capacity. In addition the increased costs of energy have mean that proper design of cost effective aeration systems is essential. This module will review the design of each of the aspects of a modern treatment plant, presenting a theoretical background to aid understanding, and providing the design equations by means of worked examples, that are necessary for effective plant design. 14 April 2010 - 01 January 1800

The focus of this orkshop is on the use of membrane filtration in wastewater treatment, both as a standalone unit operation and as a pre-treatment for reverse osmosis (RO). The range of membrane technologies used in wastewater treatment will be discussed, including the filtration technologies ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF), together with membrane bioreactors (MBR) and RO/NF (ie nanofiltration). UF/MF will then be discussed in more detail, and the commercial offerings of suppliers will be reviewed. Advantages of competing systems will be highlighted, thus enabling informed selection decisions to be made, and a process design assignment will be used to introduce issues involved in applying membrane technology. The Workshop will then examine case studies, and will discuss operational issues, helping users to understand their systems, improve performance, and solve problems. 16 April 2010 - 01 January 1800

Sustainable wastewater solutions for cities 28 June 2010 - 02 July 2010
Singapore http://www.siww.com.sg
Amidst the global economic crisis, there is a need for efficient and cost effective solutions to provide safe drinking water at an economical price to the masses. Singapore International Water Week 2010, aptly themed Sustainable Cities: Clean and Affordable Water, the water week 2010 will focus on the need for efficiency in our water solutions to address water problems in the region amidst a constantly changing environment. More than half of the earth’s population already live in cities, and the trend towards urbanisation is accelerating. This is especially true for the emerging counties in the Asian region. As urbanisation continues to gain its momentum, there is an urgency to address the water shortage issues before the situation deteriorates further and hampers economic growth. 28 June 2010 - 02 July 2010

Few processes have received the attention or have advanced so much over the past decade as anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. This is unsurprising in the light of the potential of this process to generate renewable energy with its attendant renewable obligations certificate (ROC). This module will review the microbiology and biochemistry of anaerobic digestion that is essential for a full process understanding. It will examine improvements in the design and performance of anaerobic digestion and consider the wide range of new technologies that are available for pre-treating sludge and thus enhancing gas yields and increasing solids reduction. 29 June 2010 - 29 June 2010
This second more advanced course on anaerobic digestion assumes that delegates have a basic process understanding and considers more detailed design aspects and reviews the key design strategies and process models. It views the operation of an existing plant from the perspective of optimising methane production and volatile solids destruction, including the use of pre-treatment alternatives. It considers the importance of downstream processing (digestate dewatering and disposal, liquor treatment), the opportunities for nutrient recovery and the uses for the biogas produced. Process optimisation is thus viewed from the perspective of all of the flow streams and not simply biogas production. The main process operating problems are reviewed in detail and strategies for their alleviation and prevention and covered. 30 June 2010 - 30 June 2010

The Filtration show rotates between the Midwest and the Northeast. Each year, fifty percent of the attendees are new. That means new customers for you! Locations are selected based on the high concentration of Filtration Manufacturers (buyers for your products) AND the ability of these manufacturers to drive to the show for the day. This is a critical strategy to boost sales for our exhibitors. 30 November 2010 - 02 December 2010
