High demands and innovative products are the drivers of new developments in filtration. In order to support users in various industries in their pursuit of the highest quality and a diverse product range, Eaton is optimising and expanding its range of filter media containing activated carbon.

High demands and innovative products are the drivers of new developments in filtration. In order to support users in various industries in their pursuit of the highest quality and a diverse product range, Eaton is optimising and expanding its range of filter media containing activated carbon. The upgraded BECO CARBON depth filter sheets offer particularly high adsorption properties for the demanding filtration of liquids. With their strong decolourisation abilities and adsorptive removal of undesired by-products, along with taste, odour and colour correction, they are ideally suited for use in the fine chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and beverage and biotechnology industries. The range is continuously being expanded and currently includes stacked disc cartridges and small disposable capsules in addition to depth filter sheets. The product program thus covers the requirements from laboratory to production scale.

Whether blood plasma or antibiotics, food supplements and trendy drinks or process water treatment: Activated carbon as a filter material has become indispensable in many applications. In pharmaceutical and fine chemical applications, the activated carbon is usually introduced manually into the process as a powder. A time-consuming and demanding process that requires a containment area to prevent released dusts from reaching other production areas. This effort is eliminated with the BECO CARBON range because the activated carbon is already bound in the depth filter sheets. The immobilized form saves operators the task of dosing and separating the loose activated carbon and cleaning the production areas and components, such as the pipelines. Since the activated carbon content is precisely defined in the filter material, a high, reproducible product quality and filtration performance in the applications is also guaranteed.

“Certain products, such as hard seltzer in the beverage sector, would simply not be possible without activated carbon filters,” explains Jörg Thiemann, Product Manager Filter Media at Eaton's Filtration Division. “Because only through the taste and colour correction with activated carbon filters does the drink get its characteristic properties, such as complete colourlessness. But even with established applications, the demands of users are increasing, especially in terms of quality and purity,” Thiemann continues. Filter media with activated carbon are indispensable for removing discoloration and by-products from active pharmaceutical ingredients, such as antibiotic solutions, or for preventing naturally derived products from being contaminated with pesticides or environmental toxins. The reason for this is their adsorbing properties: Activated carbon has a very large surface and a special affinity for organic substances.

Eaton offers the new filter media containing activated carbon for adsorption and decolourisation in different porosities. BECO CARBON depth filter sheets are available in the versions ACF 02 with an activated carbon content of 1,000 g/m² (microporous) and ACF 07.10 with 420 g/m² activated carbon content (meso/microporous). They are available in all common filter sizes and formats. All depth filter sheets of the BECO CARBON range meet the requirements of Regulation (EG) 1935/2004 and the German LFGB (Food, Commodities and Feed Code) as well as the test criteria of the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) guidelines according to CFR 21 § 177. For pharmaceutical applications, the BECO CARBON ACF 02 depth filter sheet is checked for endotoxin content - for maximum safety and product quality.
