The firm will provide water company Stockholm Vatten with equipment for the Henriksdal municipal wastewater treatment facility to upgrade the existing technology.
The operation is responsible for treating two thirds of the municipal wastewater for Stockholm which has one of the fastest growing populations in Europe. Once the upgrade is complete, it will process up to 864 million litres of wastewater a day.
Henriksdal, located in the centre of the city, is set inside 18 kilometres of rock tunnels presenting a major engineering challenge. GE’s LEAPmbr technology was chosen for the installation.
“GE’s LEAPmbr and ZeeWeed technology will help us meet our long-term needs for increased wastewater treatment capacity and will help us do so in a more energy efficient and cost-effective manner,” said Gösta Lindh, managing director of Stockholm Vatten.
At the core of LEAPmbr is GE’s ZeeWeed 500 membrane, an ultrafiltration technology that separates solids, bacteria and viruses from water or wastewater.
“Considering the more stringent effluent requirements for nitrogen and phosphorus removal , GE’s LEAPmbr technology is the right solution for the Henriksdal retrofit project,” said Yuvbir Singh, general manager, engineered systems—water and process technologies at GE Power & Water.
The contract will be completed in multiple stages and delivered over a period of up to five years. First shipments begin in 2016.
