Dr Cartmell doesn’t mince his words. Long-experienced in the water industry, he has helped BWA steer a path towards a stronger financial future with North American investors while keeping a refreshing, principled view on the company’s work and on-going legacy.

Here are a few sound bites from a forth coming interview that will be published in the January/February edition of Filtration & Separation:

‘‘I just think that there’s more responsibility to business leaders than just making profit,’’ he says. ‘‘We’ve got to take the industry forward, and I think having a better environmental profile is what people want. Ask the UK population what do you think we should do – make a little bit more money, or make our products a bit more safer, not just safer but more acceptable to the environment? – and you’d go for the latter. That’s how I think we should be approaching our work, how do we give the long-term view, and our long-term view to me is better environmental profile.’’

"If you’re putting chemicals into a Reverse Osmosis plant, you’ve got a responsibility for taking care of what happens to that chemical when it leaves your plant."

"What people are putting back from the plants into the environment is safe. It’s not going to hurt anybody, it’s not going to hurt any fish and it’s not going to hurt any marine organisms, but is that it? Is the chemical industry about to say, we meet the regulations and that’s it? Or should the chemical industry be saying, guys, we’ve got to keep pushing our boundaries, and make our products more environmentally acceptable, or improving our environmental profile? – and I think we can do that."
