Donaldson launches aircraft filter module

The low-drag UFM is mounted forward of the engine inlets, featuring three filter elements accessible and removable for service. These filters have a 4,500-hour service life. A translating forward-facing dome for emergency bypass provides protection from airborne solid particulate.

The system is scaleable and could be adapted for a range of heavy, twin-engine helicopters, according to Michael Scimone, president of Donaldson's St. Louis, USA office. “Our UFM was developed in response to an industry need and customer requests - tremendous potential exists within this market segment," he said.

A successful flight test programme has been completed and the development team is evaluating next steps, including certification for commercial applications.

The module, which was developed in conjunction with the Coulson Group, was on display at helicopter show HELI-EXPO 2012, which took place recently in Dallas, Texas, USA.
