The systems, provided by Netherlands-based EuroTec, are made of a high grade, multilayer films with an additional layer of film that separates the filter from the stoma. Special openings in the top of this ‘raincoat’ allow the gases to pass into the filter. The filters of the closed pouched can easily be closed off while for bathing or swimming, special POREX hydrophobic membrane prevents water penetrating the filter, whilst the gases continue to escape from the pouch.
“A common complaint of ostomates using drainable pouches with carbon filter is the bleeding of the moist content through the filter, leaving black stains in the clothing,” said Arthur Smid, co-founder of EuroTec. ”These carbon stains are hard to remove in the laundry and spoil the clothing of the patient. The combination of our raincoat and the applied Porex membrane resolves this problem.”
