Toray to provide membranes for desal plants in Bahrain and UAE

Japan’s Toray Industries Inc has secured orders to supply reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for the Al Dur 2 Desalination Plant in Bahrain and the Umm Al Quwain Desalination Plant in the United Arab Emirates.

Toray Membrane Middle East LLC (TMME) based in Dammam, Saudi Arabia will supply the RO membranes and provide technical services to the plants.

Toray’s RO elements have been operating successfully at the Al Dur 1 plant for more than eight years.

The Al Dur 2 plant will have a production capacity of 230 000 m3/day, while Umm Al Quwain will have one of the world’s largest production capacities at 681 000 m3/day. Both plants are expected to start operating in 2022.

France’s SIDEM Veolia is the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the Al Dur 2 plant and is undertaking engineering and procurement for the Umm Al Quwain facility.
