Founded in 2013 to develop advanced carbon nanotube membranes for seawater desalination, wastewater reuse, and personal water purification, Nagare Membranes is headquartered in New York City at Grand Central Tech, a community of startups.
Nagare Membranes’ founder and CEO Rob McGinnis was previously co-founder and CTO of Oasys Water.
“Nagare’s goal is to develop solutions to fresh water scarcity and waterborne disease,” said McGinnis. “The scale of these challenges is enormous, but advances in technology can have a significant impact. For example, we believe that with Nagare’s technology, it will be possible to reduce the costs of seawater desalination and wastewater reuse below the point where they will be the lowest cost sustainable sources of new fresh water.”
The desalination technologies Nagare is developing can also be applied to protect people from waterborne disease. “Imagine if every person who might be exposed to contaminated water had an affordable personal filter that would empower them to keep themselves and their families safe - one that removed all known pathogens, and worked for years without needing replacement parts,” said McGinnis. “This is something we think we can achieve.”
