GWE technology ensures sustainability

Global Water & Energy (GWE), part of the Global Water Engineering Group of Companies, is supporting international paper manufacturer and distributor Papelera Nacional S.A. (PANASA) to enhance its sustainability with a new wastewater treatment plant in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

The GWE anaerobic plant will convert organic contamination present in the wastewater to up to 4,200 Nm3 of biogas, which when used as a fuel is equivalent to 2,818 kg of fuel oil per day.

With GWE’s technology PANASA will be able to tackle two of the most significant problems faced by the pulp and paper industry – efficient wastewater treatment and fossil fuel dependency.

The organic contamination present in PANASA’s wastewater stream will be converted to biogas by GWE’s ANUBIX-T Expanded Granular Sludge Bed (EGSB).  The waste-to-energy technology, including auxiliary equipment and tanks, was chosen after a thorough selection process and will be incorporated into PANASA’s existing aerobic wastewater treatment facilities.

ANUBIX-T is suitable for high-strength wastewaters with organic content up to 15,000 mg/l. It can be used for the anaerobic treatment of wastewater streams in applications including breweries, soft drinks and other beverages production and paper mills.
