US water technology company Flow-Tech Systems recently introduced Flow-Tech Industrial, an offshoot of the company's chemical-free water treatment systems designed for heavy industrial applications.

The technology is already in use in mineral, bacteria, and corrosion management in facilities including power plants, mineral extraction processes, pulp and paper mills and largescale breweries, helping to conserve water and energy and safely adjust the discharge from these facilities.

Flow-Tech's technology was part of a two-year study with a 248 MW power plant in the Pacific Northwest. The combined-cycle generation plant had problems with reluctant silica scale and biological growth. Operators were looking for a responsible solution to treat its cooling water while mitigating potential impact on the surrounding environment.

Flow-Tech installed equipment on the cooling system's 42 in circulation pumps and the company says that since installation, it has outperformed chemicals by managing both the silica scale and bacteria fouling, allowing the plant to significantly reduce its use of chemicals and so minimising the amount of chemicals being discharged into the neighbouring river. Flow-Tech’s technology has allowed the plant to make significant savings and is taking steps to further reduce its dependence on chemicals.
