Live from FiltXPO: Ahlstrom introduces filtration material for battery electric vehicles

Ahlstrom is unveiling its latest innovation at FiltXPO, the FiltEV platform. This comprehensive platform is for filtration materials for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and includes solutions for cabin air, transmission, and battery cooling.

Cedric Vallet, Head of Business Development for Ahlstrom, took the stage at FiltXPO to discuss the emerging filtration needs within the electric vehicle sector. Noora Blasi, Marketing Manager for Filtration at Ahlstrom, provided deeper insights into the purpose and benefits of FiltEV.

‘The FiltEV portfolio is built upon Ahlstrom's proprietary three-layer wetlaid technology, offering a combination of low pressure drop, high dust holding capacity, and excellent mechanical resistance. Notably, Ahlstrom has also developed glass microfiber-based solutions tailored for battery electric vehicles’, she said.

The FiltEV platform encompasses three key solutions, the first being cabin air filtration. Cabin air quality has become a paramount consideration in the design of modern vehicles, especially for BEVs. ‘By effectively filtering particles, microorganisms, and harmful gases, air filters play a pivotal role in creating a healthier cabin environment and enhancing driving comfort. Ahlstrom offers a range of high-performance media for cabin air filters in electric vehicles’, said Blasi.

The second is transmission filtration as the cleanliness of transmission system oils is increasingly crucial for the performance, reliability, and longevity of modern transmission systems and the propulsion solutions in electric vehicles. Ahlstrom offers a selection of media for suction and pressure transmission filters, meeting OEM requirements. This includes premium glass microfiber media with optional protective scrims for high-efficiency filtration solutions.

Lastly, for battery cooling fluids filtration, Ahlstrom provides a wide range of filtration media for cooling air and liquids, ensuring the smooth and safe operation of the thermal management unit. This is because the effectiveness and lifetime of battery packs, fuel cell units, and electric motors in BEVs depend significantly on maintaining a narrow temperature window under various usage conditions.  The benefits include the highest filtration performance, extreme durability, and superior dust holding capacity.
