Desalination facility opens in Barcelona

The plant cost €230 million and will supply 200,000 m3/day of potable water. The facility was opened by the president of the Generalitat de Catalunya José Montilla and Environment Minister Elena Espinosa

Degremont constructed the seawater reverse osmosis plant in a joint venture with DRACE Medioambiente. The facility will produce 24% of the water consumed by the 4.5 million people living in Barcelona, which will ease the threat of water restrictions.

There are planned desalination plants for Foix and Tordera in Catalunya, which will add 200 million m³/year of water supply by 2014.
