Degremont to expand wastewater treatment and recycling plant in Qatar

20 June 2011

Ashghal, Qatar’s Public Works Authority, has awarded Degremont a contract to expand the Doha West wastewater treatment and recycling plant.

The project will increase the plant’s capacity from 135 000 to 175 000 cubic metres per day. The installation, which has been operating since March 2010, is currently the country’s largest operating wastewater treatment plant. The expansion work is expected to take 22 months.

This expansion comes under the contract signed in 2005 to design, build and operate the plant for 10 years. The contract is being implemented as part of a joint venture between Degremont and its Japanese partner, Marubeni Corp. The expansion is worth €35 million to Degremont.

Equipped with a state-of-the-art membrane ultrafiltration system, the facility allows 85% of treated wastewater to be recycled. The recycled water is reused to irrigate green areas and market gardens and to recharge aquifers.
