IFAT has developed into one of the world's leading trade fairs for water, sewage, waste and raw materials management. Due to popular demand, IFAT is switching to a two year cycle, beginning with an exhibition on 13-17 September at the Munich Trade Fair Centre, Germany. Filtration +Separation canvassed some exhibitors to find out what will be on display.

Anthony Bennett investigates advances in air filtration technologies for industrial applications, including automotive, dust collection, gas turbine, and HVAC systems.

Data from existing tests are of little use to HVAC system designers. Paolo Tronville of the Politecnico di Torino and Richard Rivers of EQS Inc. discuss a set of tests which could provide data for rational system design choices.

The next in Ken Sutherland's series of articles, on the smaller end-use equipment application sectors, features the use of filtration equipment in the manufacture of machinery, including the production of transport equipment as well as equipment usage in the operation of transport systems. The sector is not actually small in volume terms, but is considered in this series of articles because of its use of only a relatively narrow range of equipment types.
13 July 2010
In his series of articles, Ken Sutherland covers new developments in a number of broad classes of filtration and separation.

Filter integrity testing is critically important in biopharmaceutical production processes. However, when large numbers of filters need to be tested daily, it can be a time-consuming and costly business. Dr. Jens Meyer of Sartorius Stedim Biotech describes how this situation can be improved by parallel testing.

Effective air filtration is highly desirable in hospitals, in particular in areas with critical air quality requirements, such as childrens' wards and Cancer Research Centres. Hospitals are often located in congested urban areas which poses the problem of preventing smoke, diesel and other hydrocarbon emissions from entering the hospital environment. Mycelx undertook studies at a hospital in Georgia, USA to check the effectiveness of its air filtration systems.

Anthony Bennett looks at the major sources of indoor air quality problems, reviews the regulatory strategies being adopted to mitigate these problems, and examines the technical approaches to abate unacceptable IAQ, particularly those involving filtration.

Is it possible to test air cleaning or disinfection devices used in air conditioning systems? We look at a potential air testing system, and see if it is possible to compare different devices and determine optimum operating conditions for the air cleaning devices.
30 June 2009
Hal Alper and H. Parthasarathy from Mycelx Technologies Corporation look at the problem of ‘oily mists' – secondary aerosols found in a range of industries that can significantly decrease air quality and which require specialised filter technology to be removed.
