The next in Ken Sutherland's series of articles, on the smaller end-use equipment application sectors, features the use of filtration equipment in the manufacture of machinery, including the production of transport equipment as well as equipment usage in the operation of transport systems. The sector is not actually small in volume terms, but is considered in this series of articles because of its use of only a relatively narrow range of equipment types. 13 July 2010
In his series of articles, Ken Sutherland covers new developments in a number of broad classes of filtration and separation. 24 February 2010
Filter integrity testing is critically important in biopharmaceutical production processes. However, when large numbers of filters need to be tested daily, it can be a time-consuming and costly business. Dr. Jens Meyer of Sartorius Stedim Biotech describes how this situation can be improved by parallel testing. 19 January 2010
Despite the tight credit markets and challenging global economy, 2008 saw further consolidation within the filtration and separation sector. Listed below are the mergers and acquisitions that took place during 2008. 18 December 2009
Effective air filtration is highly desirable in hospitals, in particular in areas with critical air quality requirements, such as childrens' wards and Cancer Research Centres. Hospitals are often located in congested urban areas which poses the problem of preventing smoke, diesel and other hydrocarbon emissions from entering the hospital environment. Mycelx undertook studies at a hospital in Georgia, USA to check the effectiveness of its air filtration systems. 08 September 2009
Anthony Bennett looks at the major sources of indoor air quality problems, reviews the regulatory strategies being adopted to mitigate these problems, and examines the technical approaches to abate unacceptable IAQ, particularly those involving filtration. 23 July 2009
Is it possible to test air cleaning or disinfection devices used in air conditioning systems? We look at a potential air testing system, and see if it is possible to compare different devices and determine optimum operating conditions for the air cleaning devices. 30 June 2009
Hal Alper and H. Parthasarathy from Mycelx Technologies Corporation look at the problem of ‘oily mists' – secondary aerosols found in a range of industries that can significantly decrease air quality and which require specialised filter technology to be removed. 18 March 2009
Lon Edelman of Kimberley-Clark believes that filter media is no longer just a commodity, and that its true value can be determined by life cycle costing. This article looks at the evolution of filter media in the air sector, with a particular focus on North America. 18 March 2009
The growing number of biogas plants makes it increasingly difficult to return the fermentation residue substrates to green spaces or arable land. We take a look at a way of treating the fermentation residue substrates so that they can be discharged and re-used. 18 March 2009
Engineers set out to design a cartridge filter that could work efficiently to provide compressed air to international quality standards. The design involved looking at critical areas, such as air flow management, filtration media selection and construction and the efficient removal of coalesced liquid. 04 March 2009
The city of Atlanta is growing rapidly, which has led to increasing waste gases being emitted from wastewater plants. Following vociferous complaints from residents living near these plants, clean air specialist Purafil was called upon to install temporary and permanent contamination control units to remove the unpleasant odours. 03 March 2009
