Innovation award for AgION technology

Frost & Sullivan has selected AgION Technologies as the recipient of the 2006 Antimicrobial Additive Technology Innovation of the Year. The Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development.

AgION provides engineered antimicrobials composed of naturally occurring silver ions and zeolite that inhibit the growth of bacteria, mould, and fungus. The company's antimicrobial compound is used in diverse markets such as food and water, construction, textiles, consumer products, and in the healthcare space. The technology can ensure sustained and long lasting release of the active ingredient, silver, as well as tolerance to higher temperatures, the company says.

According to Jeff Trogolo, AgION's CTO, the technology is innovative because of its application of controlled-release silver ions. "Our technology uses ion exchange rather than dissolution to release the antimicrobial silver. This allows the dose to be strictly controlled, and less affected by pH, flow and other factors. This means that the bacteria with a potential to clog the filter and reduce performance can be efficiently reduced."
