New filter media for mist collector
Donaldson has launched a mist collector for metalworking production plants which can reportedly improve safety and health protection.
The WSO collector can be used to collect oil-bearing vapours of cooling lubricants and an reliably keep back aerosols with a separation rate of around 99.97% for oil mist particles with a size of 0.07 to 1.2 µm. Operating with a cross-flow principle, the filter inserts are open at the bottom and are passed horizontally, whilst the separated particles, which combine in the medium to form coalescent droplets, are drained downwards by gravity. This allows the separated cooling lubricants to be re-used and helps improve filter life.
The mist collector incorporates SynteqT XP, a new filter media which was developed specifically for this application. The filter fabric consists of a blend of long polyester fibres which ensure mechanical stability and very fine glass fibres which retain the oil aerosols deep inside the medium. A thermal process is used to bond the fibres. In this way, a mechanically highly stable fabric free of bonding agents is produced, with a high dirt absorption capacity and a low differential pressure. This fulfils the demands for more economy in extraction systems by low energy consumption and longer filter life, Donaldon says.
As well as this, the oblong shape of the filter, with rounded edges provides a filter surface of up to 45% larger than conventional bag filters or cartridge filters.
Donaldson says that the WSO mist collectors make an important contribution to protecting health, as some of the oil vapours are capable of entering the lungs and can be unhealthy. A standard HEPA filter with a SynteqT XP filter can also holdsback other toxic materials such as allergenic substances.
