Johns Manville unveils new class of microfibre

Johns Manville has developed the Micro-Strand® XPT microfibre, a material for use in manufacturing microglass paper used in HEPA, ULPA and ASHRAE filters which meets the rigid health testing standards established by the European Union for fibre exoneration. According to the current EU criteria, Micro-Strand XP fibre glass is exempt from EU Category 3 classification requirements and is currently considered safe to manufacture and handle using only standard safeguards to protect from possible mechanical irritation.

Micro-Strand XP is made up of fibres that are approximately one micron in diameter, and can be rapidly cleared from the lungs if accidentally inhaled, making it suitable for stringent regulatory environment, the company says. "As the first biosoluble microfibre designed specifically to meet the strict EU biosolubility testing protocol, Micro-Strand XP is a huge breakthrough in fibre development for the filtration industry," claims John Robertson, global product manager for Johns Manville's Engineered Products Group.
