World’s first Halar meltblown line available

Monadnock Non-Wovens LLC (MNW), a manufacturer of meltblown synthetic media based in New Hampshire, USA, has concluded a three-year process development programme to install the world’s first Halar® meltblown line.

“This important development enables a wide variety of process users and filter manufacturers to apply the ultra-clean and highly resistant Halar properties in cartridge, bag and flat stock media,” said Rowland Griffin, technical director of MNW. “Its application can be as wide ranging as support or pre-filtration media to other PTFE or PVDF membranes or even replacing membranes altogether with lower cost absolute rated depth filters of Halar.”

Halar ECTFE is a partially fluorinated semi-crystalline polymer produced by Solvay Solexis, a multinational plastics and chemical company. It is a copolymer of ethylene and chlorotrifluoroethylene with a very smooth surface and is said to offer a unique combination of mechanical properties and thermal and chemical resistance for a wide variety of applications.

Its properties include high resistance to chemical attack, even at high pH levels, extremely lowshedding, resistance to ultraviolet radiation, and stability in ozonated water often used in the electronics or pharmaceutical industry. It is also resistant to aggressive cleaning agents, Solvay says. It is hydrophobic and chemically inert for use in the chemical process industry as a coating or lining. The membranes are not affected by direct exposure to strong bases (such as sodium and potassium hydroxides), strong mineral and oxidizing acids (such as sulphuric and hydrofluoric acids), or chlorinated compounds (such as methylene chloride and sodium hypochlorite).
